Mafikeng Travel Guide

Map of North West Province

Mafikeng is the capital of the North West. Known as 'City of Goodwill', this quaint town is most famous for its famous battles and sieges – namely the Siege of Mafikeng, in which British forces led by Lord Baden-Powell (later founder of the Boy Scouts) resisted a Boer siege for 217 days. It is well worth exploring the Mafikeng Museum which has detailed information and documents relating to this infamous period.

While here it is well worth visiting the Credo Mutwa's Cultural Village, this is a living museum of African cultures, and ground-breaking black author Sol Plaatje's newspaper office. Also worth exploring is the 4 600 ha Mafikeng Game Reserve which is located just outside the city, it is an important White Rhino breeding centre. Also in the area is the Botsalano Game Reserve which has game roaming through Kahalari thornveld which all grow in an ancient volcanic crater.
