Itinerary

Day 1: Cape Town

On arrival at Cape Town International Airport, look out for your African Representative who will walk you to your car hire depot and help you complete formalities for your car rental. They will be able to answer any questions you may have on your trip.

Start off your Cape Experience by getting into the local way of life and pace. Relax!

Optional: Spend the afternoon exploring the world renowned Table Mountain. You can take a Cable Car to the top of the mountain which takes 5 minutes with a revolving floor giving you a 360° view of the city below.

Dinner at leisure

Day 2: Cape Town

Breakfast at the hotel

Optional: For a real Cape Experience enjoy a trip around the Cape Peninsula. Follow the False Bay coastline via Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek and Simon's Town with a stop at Boulders Beach to see the Penguin Colony before finally stopping at Cape Point. This is the “traditional” meeting place of the two oceans and sometimes you can see a clear line in the ocean where the two currents meet. Take the funicular to the old lighthouse. Continue via Scarborough and Kommetjie and then follow Ou Kaapse Weg past Silvermine and down into the Constantia Valley. In the afternoon, head for Hout Bay and stop-off at the harbour for fresh fish and chips or a boat trip to the seal colony at Duiker Island. Continue your peninsula tour via Llandudno to Camp's Bay and take a walk on the beach or enjoy a cocktail at one of the many beachfront bars and cafe's.

Day 3: Cape Town

Breakfast at the hotel

Optional: Go wine tasting in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. There are an abundance of wine estates to visit, so read through the wine map that we will provide you with or decide where to stop as you go along. Both areas have excellent wine routes that are well sign-posted and easy to find. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the wine estate restaurants or stop-off in Franschhoek's main street for a selection of quaint cafe's and bistros. Both areas are worth visiting, and although there is a fair amount of driving involved the scenery along the way is spectacular. Alternatively, stay closer to home and visit the Constantia wine estates in either the morning or afternoon - this will give you time to visit the beautiful Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens.

Optional: Take the ferry to Robben Island for a glimpse into the political history of South Africa. The trip includes a tour around the island and a tour through the prison - led by a previous inmate of this infamous island. On your return, spend a few hours shopping at the V&A Waterfront with its wide selection of boutiques and markets, cafe's and restaurants.

Day 5: Cape Town

Breakfast at the hotel

Spend a day really getting to know the local culture. Go on an organised township tour. The townships of Cape Town stand in strong contrast to the wealthier suburbs - economically, culturally and (still) racially. There is a lot of poverty and unemployment, but there is also an amazing warmth and community spirit that is sometimes lacking in richer areas. On a tour of the townships you will visit a "shebeen" (a township pub where you can try a local beer), see areas that were important in the struggle against apartheid, shop in a local craft market and be able to meet the local residents. You will find people extremely friendly and glad that you are interested in their lives.

Day 6: Cape Town

Breakfast at the hotel

Optional: Travel along the dramatic Cape Coastline to Hermanus for arguably the best shore-based whale watching in the World and the chance to see a magnificent Southern Right Whale breaching.
Close to the southernmost tip of Africa , Hermanus enjoys a richly deserved reputation for its fantastic shore-based whale watching, between July and November. From the excellent vantage points on the rocky cliff path that hugs the coastline from one end of Hermanus to the other, whale watchers can get within 20 meters of these magical creatures as they cruise along the coves. The area is a haven for the Southern Right Whale, but other species including Humpbacks, Killer whales plus Bottlenose and Common dolphins are occasionally sighted. The world’s only ‘Whale Crier’ alerts visitors to the location of the whales by blasting his kelp horn. Enjoy wondrous views of the Cape Peninsula as you return to Cape Town via Sir Lowry’s pass.

Optional: Enjoy brunch at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, followed by a morning exploring these wondrous gardens. Originally built in the 1600’s by Jan Van Riebeeck to supply the passing ships with fresh fruit and vegetables, these gardens today have a world renowned reputation for their extensive array of indigenous plants.
