Itinerary

Day 1: Durban / Fugitives Drift

Your adventure begins in the port city of Durban, where guests are met by their expert guide for a trip introduction and orientation. The lure of the Zululand Battlefields attracts visitors from all corners of the world as they flock to this region to tread the fields and experience what ensued in the 1879 battles. Travel northwards into the heart of KwaZulu Natal, past traditional villages and quaint towns, and across the mighty Tugela River en route to Fugitive’s Drift, a National Heritage Site that overlooks the historic Rorkes' Drift and Isandlwana battle sites.

Fugitive’s Drift is a unique, world-class property that has pioneered tours of the Battlefields, winning a Royal Geographic Society award in 1999 as well as a Vision in Tourism award in 2002. Guests can relax in the lap of luxury in the private en-suite cottages, each with panoramic views over the Buffalo River and rolling hills, and catch up on their history knowledge at the well-stocked Harford Library.

Afternoon at leisure to relax and explore the property and its facilities

Meals Included: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Fugitives Drift

Over the next few days, embark upon a number of signature eco-active adventures, including a guided cycle through a private reserve, spotting abundant game and birdlife. We meander past villages and kraals scattered across the countryside, becoming steadily immersed in the sense of rural Zululand.

And of course we visit the battle sites of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift, with expert insights into the epic clashes between the Zulus and British. Quite amazingly, the British army suffered their heaviest loss (at Isandlwana) and most famous victory (at Rorke’s Drift) all within the space of 24 hours, on these very Battlefields. More Victoria Crosses were awarded at Rorke's Drift than in any other single battle – a total of 14 - as the British stood their ground atop the rocky outcrop.

In addition, horse riding, guided game drives and other activities are all on the menu, or you can catch up on your history in the Harford Library and wine and dine round a roaring fire with your fellow travellers.
