Clamwilliam Lodge
Clanwilliam Lodge is a perfect place to stay while enroute to see the Namaqualand Daisies, situated in the magical Oliphant's River Valley in Clanwilliam.
Location
Only 2 hours from Cape Town, ensconced in the magical Oliphant's River Valley, the recently unveiled Clanwilliam Lodge is a colloquial gem emerging off the beaten track, oasis-like in its semi-desert setting.
The lodge
Founded in 1732, the picturesque Cape Dutch homestead of Clanwilliam is one of the ten oldest towns in the country. In keeping with the rich history of the area, Clanwilliam Lodge itself is a transformed girls hostel, originally built by the Provincial Administration in 1916. Much of the furnishings in the lodge are made from wood from the original building. Sympathetic refurbishing has made this a luxurious place to stay.
Rooms
There are 32 rooms at Clanwilliam Lodge that are luxuriously air-conditioned and have an en suite bathroom. There is a choice of doubles, twins and king or queen-sized beds on request. Suites have the option of a balcony. All the suites have a shower and a bath; and all of the rooms are fitted with a shower.
Facilities
Clanwilliam Lodge has an open poolside restaurant that serves delicious cuisine including a hearty buffet breakfast. Choose from the traditional a-la-carte menu for lunch, while dinner is a culinary choice from an extensive buffet spread. Unwind on one of the comfy daybeds at the pool, or enjoy a relaxing spa treatment. Clanwilliam Lodge is family friendly with an extensive playground nearby, complete with trampoline and Jungle Jim.
Activities
Clanwilliam Lodge is a 5 minute drive from the spectacular 18 km long Clanwilliam Dam where visitors can partake in a range of water sports including waterskiing, wake- boarding, parasailing and angling. Nature enthusiasts can enjoy sweeping vistas of flowerscapes in the nearby Ramskop Nature Reserve which boasts over 200 indigenous species of wild flowers (full bloom in August/September). Hikers and anthropologists can peruse Bushman Rock paintings, visit the local planetarium or Pakhuis Pass, just outside of town, which boasts magnificent landscapes and is the gateway to Wupperthal - a Moravian mission village. Adrenaline junkies who don't like to get their hair wet can indulge in the nearby Cederberg Mountain's scenic 4x4, quad bike and mountain bike trails. And for the 'teetotallers' - Clanwilliam is famous for cultivating Rooibos tea and factory tours are recommended.
