Wellington Winelands Trail

Wellington Winelands Trail

Nestling at the foot of the Groenberg, the historic town of Wellington lies in a picturesque valley on the banks of the Kromme River with the majestic Slanghoek - Hawequa Mountains towering over its eastern border.

Wellington is 75 km from Cape Town, and is located in the heart of the Boland. It is a wonderful area to enjoy the Winelands and scenery of the Western Cape in South Africa. It is a true surprise for anyone taking the time to explore this fabulous area! Not only is this area renowned for its scenic beauty and warm South African hospitality, but Wellington offers a mix of fabulous shopping treats for guests too!

It boasts two leather factories producing beautiful and quality leather products such as shoes, handbags, book covers and other smaller articles and has an array of boutique shops including art galleries, antique furniture, ceramic tiles and glass shops.

A great way to explore this diverse region is to do a three-day hiking trail through the beautiful Wellington valley enjoying indigenous fynbos, vineyards, orchards and olive groves. This is a hike with a difference. All you carry is a light day-pack while your luggage is transported to the next stop for you. Walk at an easy pace and enjoy the scenery as you discover hidden treasures.

Stop and taste the wines, cheeses and olives produced in this fertile valley. Fully accredited local guides will accompany you. They are on hand to show you the area and its fascinating culture. At the end of each day relax and enjoy comfortable accommodation in four different guest houses on historic Huguenot farms, each offering traditional Cape cuisine.

This is a fun way to explore the Winelands but you should be moderately fit to do the three-day walk.

There is no strenuous climbing, but there are a few hills to ascend and descend. The first day covers about 18 km, while the other 2 days cover about 10 km per day. Those who have done the twists and turns of this trail before return time and time again and agree that it is the route that provides them with the most inspiring adventures.

So, next time you are in South Africa, go on… explore the Boland!
