Cape Town, South Africa is a fantastic city to explore. There is so much to see and do – and something for everyone.
If you have a day spare and a car, I suggest that the best way to orientate yourself with Cape Town is to do a loop of the mountain and the city. This circuit is a brilliant way to get an excellent overview of the city.
The M3 is a pleasant drive for a main city road and it will take you from the city around the back of Table Mountain through rich green scenery and smart suburbs like Bishopscourt and Constantia. Where the road stops, take the left turnoff to Muizenburg, then turn right at the traffic lights and follow Main Road beside the train tracks and beaches to Kalk Bay. There is a string of intriguing shops here including some interesting antique and furniture shops. There is a great daily fish market in the harbour – fresh tuna from here is excellent! There are plenty of eateries to stop off at for lunch, including the renowned Brass Bell, with its great views of the ocean.
From here continue onto Fish Hoek (you can include the maritime town of Simons Town if you want to) and cross the peninsula to Noordhoek. From here the start of Chapman’s Peak and its awe inspiring cliff drives commence leading you to Hout Bay, a natural harbour. You can visit the World of Birds, or embark on a cruise to Seal Island from Hout Bay harbour.
From here, it is just a short hop over the coast road running below the imposing Twelve Apostles (mountains) to the brilliant white sands of Camps Bay - just in time for a sundowner drink at one of the trendy buzzing bars – before heading back to the City Bowl past Lions Head.
Enjoy yourself!
